It is always good to know the do's and dont's of go-sees to get that potential job(s). Trust Me I speak from experience. I had a go-see for a prominent and potential client which is the reason for this particular post. Yes people!! This is me as a model !!! If you have read my profile you will know I am also a model.
There are some models out there wanting to find their way into the fashion or entertainment industry but they know not what they are doing. Well here is a basic cheat sheet. The rest will be learned through trial and error. What will you learn if I tell or give you all the answers?!
Here I go:
- The most important thing a client wants to see is the models figure. Why I say this? It is due to the client wanting to know from the beginning if you fit their product. Basically, if you fit what they are looking for. Ladies and gentlemen fitted clothes are a most. I am not saying wear the clothes you just wore coming out of a night club. I am saying NICE fitted jeans, NICE fitted shirt or tank (no logos or anything that will distract the potential client). Guys, please, please, please, no jeans at your knees. You hear that? That is you asked to leave before you even walk in. It amazes me when I see this.
- Females: light to no makeup. They do not want to see your best re-creation of the blue eyeshadow, no fake lashes (tasteful lashes are ok, over the top are a no no), no heavy blush, no heavy bronzer, and no on the too much lipgloss or lipstick, light clear lip gloss or lip balm will be ok. CLEAN nails (no dinosaur nails. French tip or clean nail polish will do). I can not tell you how many times I have seen this and it amazes me with all the America Next Top Model reruns, this females have learned nothing. By the way, please have brows properly groomed (I will touch more on this on the next point). For guys: lip balm please.
- Fresh breath: Lord Almighty please have fresh breath. There are times some go-sees might run all day due to the amount of people wanting to be casted. Because of the long time frame ones breath might start getting too comfortable so to speak. Believe it or not, your breath carries. If I can smell it, I am quite sure the client can smell it as well. Always carry tic tacs, never chew gum. Nothing pisses a potential client more than a model chewing gum while they are asking you questions.
- Females always come with your hair off your face. Why would a client want to book you if they can not see your face? Pull the hair back in a pony tail. This hair tip also goes for guys that wear their hair long except put hair behind ears. But the Androgynous look is in, which might work in your favour.
- Guys: Please be clean shaven unless other wise stated. This also goes to females. Yes I said it!! You can not believe how many females I have seen who will come to go-sees with brows unkempt, pointing in every corner of the world. Mustache on top of the lip, the chin, and the forehead, excessive side burns, and hairy underarms. I remember a girl was actually asked to leave and come back once she got herself properly groomed and shaved. Embarrassing.
- Girls always bring your good heels. Guys bring clean loafers.
- Deodorant was invented for a reason please use.
- Portfolios (now to the good stuff). Your portfolios must consist of 12 to 16 photographs of your best look (if you have more that is ok). At times, clients look at the first 10 pages, you must sell yourself within those first 10 pages. Always do your research of what the go-see is all about and conform your portfolio to what the client of that product is looking for.
- Headshots, compcards, and resumes a must.
- Finally always be pleasant.
- I should have mentioned this in the beginning but here it goes. ALWAYS! ALWAYS! ALWAYS! Be on time. Clients always are attentive. This works very well in your favour.
